Anyone who has ever made a quilt wider than about 40 inches will know that they will soon be faced with working out how to best back the quilt. Do you go for fabric from the same collection or a plain, maybe calico or some people just go for a big sheet.
More often than not you will end up having to join large pieces of fabric before you have the right amount for the backing. This is time consuming and fiddly and can be very frustrating trying to make sure you have the join in just the right place.
There is no doubt that a patchwork quilt with a beautiful back is a joy to behold and unless your quilt is going to spend it's life on the wall then it is well worth spending time thinking about the backing.
Some people like to piece the back and it is a nice idea but often means that the whole thing never gets finished, and of course can make it difficult to quilt.
There is now a much wider choice of backings and many collections come with backing fabrics in complementary colours and designs.
