Colour Book Reviews
'Colour Magic for Quilters’ by Ann Seely & Joyce Stewart recognises that whether the patchwork quilter has many years
of experience or is a complete novice, colour combination can be a major hurdle.
Simple Quilting Techniques
In this book they aim to simplify the process of choosing colour combinations through the use of 'colour harmonies' –
"We will teach you how to make your quilts more colourful and harmonious by applying a few simple principles of colour
theory".
The book is designed to simplify what can be seen as a complicated area of patchwork quilting. The explanation of the colour
wheel and why it is of use to the quilter is made easy to understand. After this Ann Seely and Joyce Stewart use colour
harmonies to give the quilter confidence in using colour.
Quilt Colour Harmonies
Colour harmonies, they explain are also known as 'colour relationships', which may be more commonly known as the four colour
schemes. There follows an exploration of how colours work together. They base the colour harmonies they use on the colour wheel,
and provide full explanations of the one colour harmony, side by side colour harmony, opposite colour harmony and multi-colour
harmony. Accompanying each explanation are colour photographs of patchwork blocks illustrating how each harmony can be put
together.
This is a book which simplifies what can be seen as a complex subject and is of use to the beginner or experienced quilter.
Patterns for quilts are also included and the photographs of the various use of colour within patchwork blocks should help to
inspire.
