Patchwork Book Reviews

Good Books for Beginners

'The Complete Book of Patchwork, Quilting & AppliquÉ by Linda Seward' is a very good book to take the beginner step by step through the process of patchwork, appliquÉ and quilting.

From preparing and cutting the fabric to the finishing touches, Linda Seward provides detailed instructions, which are easily understood. The explanations are accompanied by diagrams which provide the novice with a clear map of how to proceed.

Step by Step Quilting Guide

This book will encourage rather than put off the beginner, as like your favourite recipe book you can follow the advice, collect and mix the ingredients and make a wonderful creation.

The more experienced quilter will also find this book of use as it provides instructions for a range of more complicated projects too.

For those interested in the history of quilting, there are historical facts and quilting lore throughout the book.

'The Encyclopaedia of Quilting & Patchwork Techniques by Katherine Guerrier' is ideal for the beginner and the more advanced enthusiast of the patchwork, quilting and appliqué arts. This book provides clear descriptions of the tools required and instructions needed for both simple and complicated quilts. Side by side with the instructions are colour photographs to illustrate each step.

Quilt-making Guides

The book is full of beautiful colour photographs of various patchwork patterns, appliquÉ and quilting. These examples will not only encourage the beginner to have a go, but will inspire the more experienced quilter too.

'The Art of Classic Quiltmaking by Harriet Hargrave & Sharyn Craig' is not for the absolute beginner, but after the first few projects perhaps every enthusiast should have a copy of this book on their shelves.

Learning The Basics

Harriet Hargrave and Sharyn Craig make it clear from the very start of this book that they are completely different in their tastes and preferred methods. As they say, they have agreed to disagree. What this makes is a book, which provides different suggestions and a wide range of views and advice for designing and making patchwork and appliqué quilts.

This is a book to be read and digested and/or to be delved into when you have a particular question on your project. This is a very detailed book, but don't let that put you off. It is easy to read and understand and you are helpfully reminded that even the best quilters make mistakes. That's how we learn our craft.
