Patchwork Blocks & Designs - Overview
A patchwork block consists of a repeated unit of shapes which when stitched together form a block pattern. Once the quilter has made several blocks and begins to place them together, a complex overall design can be created. Both pieced patchwork and appliqué can be made in block format.
The quilter can, through choice of fabric and pieced shapes, make a quilt that is uniquely their own. Over the generations a number of block patterns have become popular with quilters who know their names like old friends. Such pattern titles include Jacob’s ladder, Ohio Star and Bears Paw.
