Stripes and checks can be found in printed and quite commonly woven fabrics. Stripes usually run parallel to the selvedge and are produced as multi-coloured or tone-on-tone. They are particularly effective for sashing or framing the quilt.
Versatile Quilting Pattern
Stripes should not only be considered for framing patchwork blocks and quilts, but also in small amounts within the blocks as a complementary design to floral, Japanese and other shaped patterns. Stripes are not always formal and are designed in fun multi-colours and of varying length and thickness for lighter contemporary quilts and novelty projects.
Create A Theme With Checks
Checks or plaids can be found on both printed and woven fabric. They come in small to large check designs and fit comfortably with many other types of woven or printed fabric. Woven checks can be useful in adding an 'antique' effect to the quilt. Lighter gingham style checks can add a summery feel and work alongside Spring and Summer floral designs and pastel spots.
In order to ensure stripes and checks appear straight in the patchwork pattern, use in small pieces. Where a large piece of checked fabric is required consider using woven fabric as this is easier to cut and align on the grain.
