Fabrics printed with shapes such as diamonds, triangles, stars, squares and hearts should be considered within a project, to add interest, emphasise a theme and/or create texture.
Malleable Geometric Shapes
Patchwork blocks are comprised of geometric and circular shapes. The use of shapes on the fabric prints can add to the geometric or circular nature of the quilt. Small geometric diamonds and squares can be used to create the effect of roof tiles and bricks, or stonework in a landscape project. Batik fabric with randomly printed squares can be mixed with natural foliage or abstract batik prints to add contrast.
Create Textured Themes
Combine stars and hearts for a youngster's first quilt or add to novelty prints for extra interest. Beach ball patterned fabric adds a light summer or seaside feel, while shell shapes will of course emphasise a quilt with an ocean theme. Feather shapes can be used as an alternative to a floral blender and could work particularly well with Japanese print designs.
