Brown is a versatile colour which lends itself well to most other colours on the colour wheel. It is made by mixing red, yellow and black and so browns range from light to dark but also from red-browns to yellow-browns.
Rich Autumnal Shades
Red-browns include mahogany, auburn, russets and rust and orange-red brown in chestnut. These are lovely warm colours to work with and to mix with reds, burgundy, purple and warm yellows for an Autumnal feel.
Add Age To Your Design
Yellow browns such as sepia and umber work well with faded colours and creams to give your project a sense of age. These colours also work well in seascapes combining well with deep and aqua blues, orange and yellows.
Perfect For Framing
Dark or light browns work well as a frame or border around your quilt, and are naturally good foundation or background colours reflecting their role in the colour scheme of nature.
