Black is one of the most dramatic colours, but should not be avoided for that reason alone. Black can be used in small quantities with almost any colour to heighten or intensify, for example, the vibrancy of yellow, the warmth of orange or the passion of red.
Ideal For Patchwork Framing
In larger quantities it can be successfully used as a frame around individual patchwork pieces or blocks to produce, for example, a stained glass effect. It can be used as a border for an entire quilt to emphasis the pattern of the patchwork blocks or to act as a picture frame around the quilt for a wall hanging.
Intensify Vibrant Patterns
Of course for a really dramatic effect consider a quilt designed entirely of pure black and white or add shades of grey for a subtle, more sophisticated feel. Despite this pure white is rarely used in quilting.
